About the  Fund:

Each year the Los Angeles Chapter awards several scholarships to deserving Penn State students from the Greater Los Angeles area.  All funds in our scholarship account come directly from the support of local alumni and friends.

In 1998 the Los Angeles Chapter decided to award a special alumni endowed scholarship to a deserving Penn State student from the LA area in memory of Julius and Phillip Epstein, class of 1931.  The twins brothers were members of the Penn State boxing team, dedicated to their Alma mater and inseparable.  They moved to LA and became screenwriters in the heyday of the Studio System.

Julius (Julie to his friends and associates) and his brother Phillip are remembered among the great screenwriters in motion picture history.  Their most notable screenplay and Academy Award winner was "Casablanca." The film was recently voted the 2nd greatest motion picture of all time. Julius was also honored by the Penn State Alumni Association as a distinguished Alumni of Penn State.

How to Apply for a Scholarship:

Consideration for this scholarship is given to all full-time undergraduate or graduate students enrolled or planning to enroll at the University who have achieved superior academic records and whose home address of record is in the chapter's geographic area, including Greater Los Angeles and the Counties of Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Ventura, California.  First preference for scholarships are given to dependents of members of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association.  If there are no suitable candidates, preference may next be given to dependents of alumni residing in California.  Scholarship Applications are sent (via email and/or U.S. Postal Service Mail) to local students residing in LA County.  A decision on the scholarship recipient(s) is made by June 30th of each year.  Thus, funds are awarded before the Fall semester for our winners.
