We'll be participating in the 25th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day, a worldwide event to clean up the world's beaches. At last count, over 60 nations participated! Last year, more than 14,000 volunteers participated in LA County alone, removing a record 150 tons of trash in 3 hours -- that was a 65% increase from the year before, and roughly equal to the weight of 100 cars! Some of the more unusual items found in recent years: a chandelier, a briefcase full of graham crackers, a restroom urinal, a fake mustache, and a bridal gown.
After the Coastal Cleanup, we'll have a pot-luck cookout at Miramar Park in Torrance, adjacent to the parking lot for the Coastal Cleanup.
After the cookout, we'll drive just a few miles south to Abalone Shoreline Park in Rancho Palos Verdes to explore the tidepools. You'll see living marine life like urchins, anemomes, sea hares, fish, sea stars, and octopus in their living environment. It is an experience not to be missed! Parking costs $5 per car.
Prepare Beforehand!
Supplies & What to Wear
-All cleanup supplies are provided at all sites (trash and recycling bags, gloves, data cards, pencils). However, if you have them, they encourage folks to bring their own reusable bag, bucket and/or gloves.
-Parking flyer: Bring a copy of this flyer --http://www.healthebay.org/volunteer/ccd/2010/assets/pdfdocs/CCD_2010_Parking_Flyer.pdf -- to display on your car dashboard to benefit from the free and/or discounted parking from 8:30am - 1pm.
-Liability Waiver: The California Coastal Commission and Heal the Bay, the organizers of the event, require that all participants sign a waiver. They will have copies on-site for you to complete, but it will help expedite check-in if you bring yours already printed and signed. You can find it here: http://www.healthebay.org/assets/pdfdocs/waivers/ccd/2010/CCD%202010%20English%20Waiver.pdf
